Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam or M.I.A. is a rapper, singer, and visual artist of Sri Lankan Tamil origin. The daughter of a Tamil activist-turned militant was born on July 17, 1977 in London England. At the age of six months her family moved back to Sri Lanka. But in the mist of a violent Sri Lankan civil war, they were forced to return to London as refugees. It was there in London at the influential age of 11 that M.I.A. was introduced to western culture. Her affinity for rap and hip hop began and she attributes Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante, and NWA as her influences.
